My book is titled you don’t know me after a song of the same name by one of my favorite artists Tinashe. I chose this name when I was replanning my concept for the book after I no longer felt connected to my first idea. This name represents the book because the “you” in the title refers to many different things, me, the person looking through the book, people that won’t, society, etc. The narrative in the book has two layers that flow with each other. One is the degradation of nature, and the other is self-discovery. Self-portraiture is not something I have ever explored before this book because of personal insecurities, but I felt that because of that I needed to do it even more. All self-portraits in my book are in black and white to offset the colors of the environmental photos. I intentionally made my self-portraiture so that either my face is not in it or when it is, it is blurred in some way. This was to convey the sense of not knowing yourself and still being on the road to self-discovery. Coupled with these are pictures of both natural environments and unnatural occurrences that affect the planet. These photos are highly edited to be mixes of bold colors in order to depict that in today's age none of them are promised to last. These two concepts are paired together to say that being a young person now is a race against the clock to find yourself, love what you find, and do what you love while the world is burning around you. It can be disheartening to think that all the work you put into yourself may end up not amounting to anything because of the 1%/government both past and present not considering anyone that comes after them. While this is what the concept of my book was born from, I don’t want it to be only about negativity because while making it I have gotten to know myself better and produce something I am proud of. Since this is the reality we live in, I feel that art truly is the key to yourself.
